This illustration borrows analogy from the classic Waddington landscape. In the paper highlighted by this cover, researchers found that potassium in the tumor microenvironment causes naive tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes to maintain their stem-like characteristics and have a chance at continuing to fight the tumor. In this illustration, T cells roll down slides representing their development from naive (top) to exhausted (bottom). Potassium is represented by an orange platform catching a T cell from progressing further into its life cycle and becoming an ineffective fighter.
